Issue Installing SQL Server 2008 + Visual Studio:

Almost a month ago my PC needed to be reinstalled. Previously it had Windows XP, now Windows 7 is installed.

From the beginning I could not install the Developer edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Now a month later I still cannot. In the meanwhile I have installed a 'preview' version of SQL Server 2008, but it is uninstalled now and (as far as I can tell) all related registry entries have been removed.

The error message never changed by the way, it says: "This SQL Server Setup medio is not supported on a X86 system...."

I found a small number of solutions on the web, like cleaning up the registry, but none of them worked on my system.

Now I am on a tight deadline, but also completely lost. so I can use some support.

Is it possible that MS SQL Server "add node" process can cause an unwanted failover?

Hello all,

I am planning to try to move some SQL2005 and SQL2008 from a 2nodes (VMs) to another 2nodes (physical).

A. What I plan to do is :

1. add physical machines as 3rd and 4th node of Windows cluster and form a 4node Windows cluster

2. stop all scheduled user created jobs (backups etc.)

3. for each instance existing, run on 1st physical machine (3rd node) the "add node" for all existing SQL2005 and SQL2008 failover clustered instances (FCIs) and Service Packs

4. for each instance existing, run on 2nd physical machine (4th node) the "add node" for all existing SQL2005 and SQL2008 failover clustered instances (FCIs) and Service Packs

5. one-by-one, faiolover the instances from VMs to physical nodes and do all the ckecks for the health of the system. If ok run backups and continue failover the next one. If there is anything wrong failback check and retry.

6. Run backups, enable jobs

the tricky part is that the systems is a live system.

we plan to do the installations during non-maintenance window an do the failover inside maintenance window.

Is there anything causing the SQL Server to actually failover DURING sql setup of "add node"? (e.g.: cluster validation before addign to cluster)?

B. We have all kind if services to be installed, includingn SSAS, SSIS, SSRS and thye already exist in VMs in one resource group per instance. I guess that during each "add node" run per instance they are all going to be installed at once for this instance, right?

C. anything special we should be aware of?

thank you very much!

kind regards, Thomas G. Apostolou

if i download a trial version from microsoft site and enter same key of enterprise edition, does it mean it the edition will be developer edition.

My question is does developer/standar/enterprise depends on the KEY that we enter ?

SQL Cluster: use NFS or iSCSI for datadrives

Hello All,

I'm looking to setup a cluster and would like to use NFS or iSCSI.

I have a 1GBit network interface for the connectivity to my NFS or iSCSI target.

Is this a realistic design?

Can NFS or iSCSI be used for the datadrives? I've already seen some documents where MSFT state that they recommend local storage or FC SAN.
The network I'll be building on is very relialable, but still I'm worried about the consistency of my databases.

TCPIP however is designed to resend any eventual dropped packets, but I'm wondering if SQL can deal with this.

Does anyone have any experience in this?

What about the connection speed? is 1GBit sufficient?

I will run some System Center products on it, as well as a VCenter database.

Any guidance is much appreciated!

Filip

SQL server 2000 upgrade to SQL server 2012

While migrating from SQL server 2000 databases to SQL server 2012 databases , we need to follow one of the below approach .

SQL server 2000>>SQL Server 2005 SP4 >> SQL server 2012

  • Clean approach to migrate Remediation of Non ANSI SQL 2000 code to ANSI complained code
  • TOC of SQL server 2005 is less than the TOC for SQL server 2008
  • Amount of remediation for data type deprecation, syntax changes is high from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 migration

SQL server 2000>>SQL Server 2008 R2 >> SQL server 2012

  • Remediation for SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 will be handled in on go
  • TOC of SQL server 2008 is higher than the TOC of SQL server 2005
  • Most of the remediation issue will be address at the intermediate migration

Kindly let me know your views about the best approach ?

Can't seem to restrict access to SQL Server 2005 even with non-standard static port

Hi,

I am trying to make my SQL Server 2005 a little more secure by using a non-standard static port.  I have already disabled the sa account, but I'm still getting hit at least once a second with an attempt to login to my server from a potential attacker so I thought using a static, non-standard port would do the trick.

I stopped the SQL Browser service, left the port number unspecified for the IP1 and IP2 entries in the SQL Server Configuration Tool and set a non-standard port for IPAll. I thought that was all I needed to do.

I'm using a .NET website to test the connection.  I left my connection string in the web.config alone, so I was expecting I would get a login failure when the website attempted to connect to the database.  Without a port number specified in the connection string, it should attempt to connect using the default port and fail, right?  But, I'm still able to gain access to the website.

I made sure to restart the SQL Service after making changes.  Also, I have verified that the SQL Browser service is not running.  Is there any additional information I need to provide?

Thanks in advance for your time.

David

I've tried installing Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 (KB2716427) to our SQL Server 2005 Server which is currently runing 9.0.5292, but it fails.

It manages to install the Integration Services and Tools, but Database services fails to install with this message:

Looking in HotFix.Log I can see:

Repair SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Hi everyone,

I would like to repair my actual SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU1 Express with Advanced Services setup.

BTW, the "SELECT @@VERSION" statement actually gives me this result:

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0 (Intel X86)   Jun 28 2012 08:42:37   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 6.0 <X86> (Build 6002: Service Pack 2)

When going through the "control panel/add-remove programs",  I then got a popup window:  "Browse for SQL Server 2008 R2 installation media".  Where should I find this setup file the repair process is asking for?

Looking at my C: drive for any setup files like "SQLEXPRADV_*.exe", I could find the following:

  • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe:  version is 10.0.1601.1
  • C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\SQL Server 2008 Express Install\Downloads\SqlExpressWithAdv\SQLEXPRADV_x86_FRA.exe: version is also 10.0.1601.1
  • The one I recently downloaded from the web - SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe:  version is10.50.4000.0

  I also found these ones:

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.4000.0   date: 2012-06-29
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2494086\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.1790.0   date: 2011-06-14
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2507770\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.1777.0   date: 2011-06-10
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2528583\ServicePack\x86\setup100.exe
    version: 10.50.2500.0  date: 2011-07-25
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2544793\QFE\x86\setup100.exe
    version:  10.50.2769.0 date: 2011-07-27
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2630458\ServicePack\x86\setup100.exe
    version:  10.50.4000.0 date: 2013-01-10

Which one would you suggest I choose for my repair?  I would myself choose the last one (KB2630458) but I'm not sure because of the SP2CU1 level I currently am. Or maybe I'm still not looking at the right place?

Thanks in advance for helping,

Stéphane

SSIS Package Error after installing SQL Server 2012 SP1 Cumulative Update 3

After updating my desktop to SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU3 (11.0.3349), my SSIS Projects fail with the following error:

I uninstalled the hot fix back to Cumulative Update 2 (11.0.3339) and the packages open without error.

Is there a published workaround for this issue?

How can I check to see if my custom install can install SQL before my custom installer trys to install SQL 2008 or 2012

$

I have a install for my software that depends on SQL. I want to install SQL 2008 or 2012 express versions if SQL does not exist on the system. However, it is possible and likely that the system has been configured in a way that causes the SQL install to fail. I want to run a pre-install check to make sure SQL has the correct permissions to install before I attempt the install. Is there a way to call the SQL install so that you can get a return of errors without actually installing SQL. Or is there a program I can run as part of my install to check the system will not block the SQL install. My ultimate goal is to problematically set the polices and  permissions of the system, Install SQL and then reset the computer permissions to the way they were before the install.

When I check, SQL has the updated version number, and if I try to install the SP3 again, it says there are no applicable engines to update. So it seems that the update went part way through, errored out, left no indication of why, and then locked me in so that I cant try again, other than to completely uninstall and re-install.

Sage themselves have spent nearly 4 hours trying to install the sql server with no success, they keep coming up against the following error

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
Unknown property.
.

There is no error code, no description, just the FULL STOP!! beneath unknown property, they have uninstalled and re installed countless times, removing every trace of the sql in all the expected places. They are stumped!

Anyone else encountered this problem on windows 8

Cheers

Andy

Error While Rebuilding system databases

Hi,

I installed my SQL Server with a wrong collation. I tried to rebuild the instance and when i tried doing that I am getting a weird error as given below. ALso the installation is picking the edition as evaluation instead of enterprise, i tried executing the install file and it went through to install a enterprise edition. I am not sure why the installer is picking up the evaluation edition instead of enterprise as the option is set.
