Unable to complete configuration of new installation MSSQL Server 2017 on Ubuntu 18.04

All been working fine for about half a year and then suddenly stopped working: I was not able to login into the server.

I tried reinstalling the software, but wahtever I tried stopped at this point:

Microsoft Command Line Utilities 15 for SQL Server installation failed

In a Windows Server 2016 Standard I installed Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server (msodbcsql_17.3.1.1_x64.msi)

After that, I tried to install Microsoft Command Line Utilities 15 for SQL Server but I have the error "Setup is missing an installation prerequisite: Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server".

But the driver are alredy installed.

The server need a reboot?

SQl Server Memory Requirement

Hi

I have SQL Server 2012 installed on Windows Server2008R2. I have allocated 15GB memory to SQl Server. But i think SQl server allocating 15GB memory but actuly its not using this much of memory. I want to release some memry from SQl Server. Is there any way to check and monitoring SQl for confirming it. Is it possible to see historical memeory data used by SQl Server.

Log Shipping to old box?

My primary SQL Server box is 2005 Standard x64 running on 2 quad-core processors.  I'm licensed for 2 processors.

 

I'd like to set up some kind of redundancy.  The hardware I have available is about 4 years old and is currently running SQL Server 2000. Let's assume I upgrade the old box to SQL Server 2005 Standard.  A couple of questions:

 

1) It seems the hardware gap between the 2 will make little difference in a log shipping.  Please confirm this.  Any other things that might be an issue?

2) Do I need lots of CALs on the backup box for Log Shipping?  Or can I get by with 5?

3) I'd like to schedule log shipping pretty often--maybe every 5 or 10 minutes.  Will this be an issue?

Upgrade sqlserver 2008 and 20082 to 2014

I have read several post on the TechNet site and from the SQLServer Upgrade Technical guide on page 97 of 454, it suggests that we cannot perform direct in-place upgrade from a 32-bit edition of sqlserver 2008/2008r2 to any 64 bit edition of sqlserver 2012. However database can be restored or attached to a 64 bit edition of sqlserver 2012. So I am planning to use the technique side by side upgrade. Can this upgrade be done on the same server (existing 2008r2) installing 2014 provided we meet the hardware requirement. Can we choose the default instance name although the default instance name is already defined in 2008r2. Do we have to uninstall 20082 and the services will be deleted after upgrade. We also have fox-pro application, and there are 17 databases.

I can run backup script/detach and attach the database to sqlserver 2014.

There are few linked servers, 10+ jobs, Database Maintenance Plans. It would be great if anyone has a step by step upgrade plan for 2008/2008r2 to 2014.

SSDT for VS 2017/2019 Install Failing

I have followed these instructions to the letter:

and this still keeps failing with the following error in the logfile: 

Initializing string variable 'SystemLocaleMismatch' to value 'Setup detected mismatch between the languages of the installer and the OS. Use the English-language version installer, or install the language pack and change the format and system locales through the regional settings in the control panel.'

SSRS Upgrade from 2010 version to 2017 Version

Hi There,

       I am in the situation to upgrade my SSRS Report 2010 version to 2017 version, because all of my database upgraded to 2017, So, I Need to upgrade my SSRS as well, 

      I have surfed in the internet but could not find any answer for this one, 

      Could anyone guide me the steps to upgrade it, whether i can directly upgrade it to 2017 or should i go with 2012 then 2017

Hello, 

I recently uninstalled SQL Server and now I'm trying to install it again (SQL Server 2017 Developer Edition, Basic installation)..

The problem is, every time I do it, in the end of the installation I get a page saying "Oops, unable to install SQL Server".

I've tried to delete all sql folders and registry keys, uninstall virtually everything related to SQL Server, installing as admin, cleaning and fixing the registry, reboots, and so on... Nothing seems to be working!

"wait on database engine handle recovery failed"

  i am installing sql 2012 and getting error wait on database engine handle recovery failed. i  changed the credentials to "NT Authority\NETWORK SERVICE" but getting same error.

Can't change UI Language of SQL Server Management Studio 17.1 to English

Hi,

I do have installed the English Version of SQL Server 2016 and SQL Server Management Studio 17.1.  


How can I change the language to English?  As you can see, the DB menu in Object Explorer is in English, but the user interface still is in German.

When I use the link to install other languages. I get a link to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=558810&clcid=0x407 

This is completely  wrong, because it redirects me to install a "Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Sprachpaket" = Language Pack for VS2015.  Why I need to install a Language pack if I installed the English version: "SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe"

I do have Visual Studio 2017 English installed.  

It's very strange.

SQL-Server on Hyper-V 2019

Hi,

we need to size/buy the hardware for a Hyper-V Server that fit best for the use with a MSSQL2017/2019 Server. The thing is, we get very different information from our partners about the configuration of the harddiscs. The Server has to use local drives, so we decided to use ssd.

The problem we got stuck on is how to configure them. From the SQL-Servers point of view you would use dedicated RAID-5 for the database-files and dedicated RAID-1 for logfiles and tempdb. But how about the hyper-v point of view ?

Shall we use the dedicated RAID´s and apply them to the SQL-Server as dedicated drives (as physikal or virtual ?), or shall we build a RAID10 and let all the SQL-DB`s and virtual machines run on this one global drive ?

Any suggestions are welcome

Windows server 2008R2 is installed in 64-bit operating system, and there are 88 databases in this server and several jobs and server objects. It might be a complex task to do a side by side upgrade to 2014. Since they are on VM's I was thinking if I could create a copy perform upgrade and test. Can anyone share any experience of in place upgrade on a complex server?

Im have SQL 2014 alr ínstall with open license ( my company buying open license and im use account to dowload from VLSC) 

but when im try to show license system said number license is Null . IS mean SQL dont have lic yet ?

Page file confusion

Page file confusion

I’m planning to create couple of virtual machines based on Windows Server 2019 (host Windows Serer 2012 R2). One of main will be MS SQL with 128GB RAM – it will be replicated to second site using Hyper-V Replica.

For few hours I’m trying to find advise how to correctly configure page file on the VM (host is clear – just leave it as automatic), and found many contradicting answers. Perhaps somebody can advise something. I found following:

  1. Disable completely page file as you have enough RAM and you don’t need it
  2. Set page file as 1.5xRAM, even if it is huge
  3. Set page file as 1.5x(Total machine RAM – RAM allocated for SQL)
  4. Set page file as automatic
  5. Place page file on OS drive as it won’t be used to much so it can be replicated without any issues.
  6. Place page file on dedicated drive to make sure it won’t se much bandwidth during replication.

All arguments which I read about above are reasonable but I have no idea what really should I chose.

Sql 2019 preview installation on RHEL

I am trying to install SQL 2019 Preview on RHEL 7.6 .  When configuring mssql , it failed with following errors:

SQL Server Agent not listed as cluster resource

Hello everyone, thanks for any help on this issue.  I have recently installed SQL 2008 R2 on a Server 2008 R2 machine cluster.  We ran the advanced cluster prep and completion.  I have SQL Server up and running properly and failing over between nodes.  In the failover cluster manager, when I select SQL Server, I do not have the SQL Server Agent listed under other resources.  When I try to start the Agent from the SQL Configuration Manager it fails with an event 103 and I've found several notes on this error but I am figuring the root issue is that there isn't a cluster resource for the Agent.

Is it possible to create the resource for the Agent? I have run a repair and I have tried to use add a resource, generic service, sql agent but it fails when I attempt to bring it online.
