setup of multiple SqlServer instances on clustered windows - remote connection fail

$

hi

it has been a long while since i had to do a setup similar to this, and I am finding it cumbersome..

our windows cluster has 2 node on active-active & multiple instances of SQLSERVER installed (a total of 4)

while at using SSMS on this cluster i can connect to the named instance ssinst04\ssinst04 and everything is well.

however, it will not connect while i try to connect from another system.

there are no firewalls running on either system nor a firewall in between them.

the OS on both is Windows Server 2008 R2.

on the client, I can run a correct ping.

on the client, if i try testing SQLSERVER connectivity as below, i have no response:

telnet ssinst04 1433

i have checked the ports used by the server, like:

SELECT local_tcp_port

FROM   sys.dm_exec_connections

WHERE  session_id = @@SPID

/*

returned

1433

*/

i have set the connection on SSMS in the host server to use TCP/IP and defined the connection string as:

ssinst04\ssinst04,1433

that has worked correctly.

but the same connection string on the remote client does not work.

Yes! I have checked the tick-box for 'allow remote connections to this server'

maybe it is something very very obvious .. I am not seen.

please let me know if you have any further info.

could I please ask for some suggestions?

thanks,

SQL Server Time Zone settings

$

Hi Folks,

I am looking for some help on how we will handle time zone setting in a SQL Cluster.  We currently have a six node SQL cluster with multiple instances running on it.  I have been asked to supply a new Instance for a new project but the problem is the users that will be using it are based in New Zealand and We are located in Dublin!  They will be using a Dynamics Navision database on this Instance.  So my question is can I set the time zone different on this new Instance to their time, cant seem to find any details this.  Most of the documentation seems to indicate you use the datetimeoffset feature or its usually handled within the Application.  I am hoping its the latter but any help on this would be grateful, especially if somebody had experience with the issue before.

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 SP2 Cumulative Update 5

We are starting to take a look at Cumulative update 5 for SQL Server 2012 SP2.  The Installation was going smooth until the very in, where it sat on trying to start MSSQLServer for several minutes and finally timed out.  Why does Cumulative patch 5 says it failed to start the service when the server is already running?  Version number changed, and everthing looks ok, except for the error message in the log file.

Is this a valid installation or do I need to try again?

Thanks.

Sql Server 2014 on MS 2012 R2 non-standard port not able to connect

I've install sql server 2014 on ms 2012 R2 several times and we generally use a non-standard port without issue. I did a new instance install and when I try to change the default port on the default instance and we are unable to connect via a client.  The sql server says it's listening on the port, netstat -na shows something is listening on the port, but I'm getting a tcp provider error 10061 no connection could be made.  Browser is running and I've also tried a client alias with the specific port.   We initially thought it was a firewall issue, I've completely dropped the firewall.  The client is a 2012r2 server as well.

Also we are running wireshark and we don't see traffic on the new port, but continue to see acks on the 1433 port.  Not sure if there is a subcomponent that still uses that port, but we aren't seeing any traffic on new port.  I had sysadmins install telnet and I can telnet to new port so something is listening, but can't connect with ssms.

Planning SQL upgrade for workstation with multiple instances where 2005 is default instance

Currently have 2005 as the default instance and 2008 as a named instance.

Can I upgrade the 2005 instance with the result being 2012 being the default instance?

Im trying to avoid uninstalling everything and re-install from scratch...even though I have a feeling thats probably the less problematic.  Also Im guessing 2005 is not a valid upgrade source for an upgrade to 2012.

Or option 3, just simply install a new 2012 instance.  If I then uninstall my 2005 instance, which one will become the default or how would I set the default?

Transferring 3 SQL databases from both SQL Express 2005 and Standard to a new physical server

$

I am trying to figure out the best method for transferring SQL 2005 databases from 2 different physical servers to a new server running windows server 2008 64bit.

I own a fully registered copy of Microsoft SQL 2005 32bit Standard Edition. However all of my SQL databases together are only 4GB in size thereby making 2008 SQL Express an option.

Here is the breakdown of the servers:

1) (Old Server1) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Express 2005 32bit
2) (Old Server2) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Server 2005 32bit Standard
3) (New Server) Windows 2008 Server 64bit - (Not sure which version to install)

**The objective is to migrate 2 SQL databases from Old Server1 and 1 SQL database from Old Server 2 to the New Server. What version should I install on the new server??? Do I go with 2008 express or install the 2005 Standard Edition?

Pending your response to which version to install, what are the correct steps to migrate (which I have never done before) the databases from both of these servers to the new server?

I have researched this online and I think this particular situation is unique in that I am transferring from both SQL Express and Standard from 2 different physical servers to a 2008 server that is 64bit. I cannot find anything online that I feel confident in trying. Please help me, as I have this migration deadline of this weekend. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

SQL Server number of processors limitation and licenses

$

In the following link by Microsoft they are showing the number of processors one instance of SQL Server is limited to use

Compute Capacity Limits by Edition of SQL Server

And also they are saying:

"These limits apply to a single instance of SQL Server. They represent the maximum compute capacity that a single instance will use. They do not constrain the server upon which the instance may be deployed. In fact deploying multiple instances of SQL Server on the same physical server is an efficient way to use the compute capacity of a physical server with more sockets and/or cores than the capacity limits below."

My question:
Does this implies that when I licenses the server I licenses all server processors once regardless of the number SQL Server instances installed on that one server.
For example if I have one server that has 32 cores. I have to buy licenses for all 32 cores once with amount X, but I can install as much instances as I want and the amount X will remain X, and it will not be:
X * number of instances installed
... is this true ?

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Unable to finish the SQL 2012 installation on a VM Machine

Hi, My name is Leonard and I am studying SQL. I have downloaded the newest MS SQL 2012 and also MS 2012 Hyper-V. I have set a MS 2012 Hyper-V on a laptop with AMD Turion 64 X2 and 3G of RAM (Planing to add more to max at 8G).

Following the instructions in the free onlineAdministering Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Databases” Training Kit, I have set 6 virtual machines as instructed in the Training Kit. While the installation of the MS Server Core 2008 R2 SP1 completed with no problem, the same cannot be said for the SQL Server 2012 installation. I have encountered an error that I have not seen anyone address in any of the SQL web forums.

After running the unattended setup instruction (Setup.exe /qs /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /SQLSVCACCOUNT="Njowa\Pa$$worD>" /SQLSVCPASSWORD=" Pa$$worD” /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="Njowa\lenny#4!@" /AGTSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\Network Service" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS) this is what I get after a series SQL setup initiation windows popups then disappears.

The following error occurred:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Error result: -2147467261

Result facility Code: 0

Result error Code: 16387

Please review the summary.txt log for further details

My question is: What instance of an object is not properly initialize in the Setup instructions

SQL Sever 2012 will not install - Database engine or scenario.exe failure

Hello everyone!

I have been trying for days to get MS SQL Server 2012 SP1 installed on my 1and1 VPS and every installation attempt fails. It will hang at the SqlEngineConfigAction_install_startup_Cpu64 for a few minutes and then give me a ScenarioEngine.exe - Application Error message. Once I click ok, the entire installation bombs out. Error logs state that the installation never occurred.

The server specs from 1and1 are:
XXL Package
6 vcores
500GB Hard Drive Space
6GB Memory
Windows 2008 R2 DataCenter SP1

All help is greatly appreciated!!

SQL Server 2008 R2 install errors on Server 2012

$

I hope someone can help me with a SQL Server 2008 R2 issue I have encountered.

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Server 2012 server. There used to be a previous SQL server installation on the server. I had uninstalled it and cleaned up all known instances of SQL; registry, folders, temp folders, etc.

When I attempt to install SQL 2008 R2, it fails twice at the points below. All other items during the setup seem to get installed.

This occurs in both an installation or a repair procedure.

The ISO is in good condition and not corrupted.

I have not found any solutions as of yet.

Any ideas on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.

I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.

I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.

Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?

Thanks,

Zack

SQL 2014 Upgrade Advisor Won't Detect SQL Instance

$

I installed the Upgrade Advisor on my workstation.  I was able to run the Advisor on 3 different servers from my workstation.  When I tried the last 2 servers, the Advisor would not detect my Instance on the server.

So, I installed the Advisor directly on the server and tried to run it again.  It still will not detect the instance.

I have check the port, I have checked the remote services settings. I have been into the registry to verify the MS SQL services entry has the correct information for the instance.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility

I am running SQL server 2008 R2, 64 bit, When i attempt to backup Blackbaud Financial Edge version 7.86 either manaully or via a scheudle, I am SUDDENLY getting error 'Executed as user: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. sqlmaint.exe failed.  [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (1) without succeeding. The step failed.'

A Blackbaud Article (BB584984) says to install the SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility components.  What concerns me is why this broke suddenly and why the components would fix it, as I am wary of changing something without knowing why the fix should work, especially after it worked without the components for years.  Blackbaud will not support this part of my question, as they disclaim all support for SQL.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to create a new dev environment and I'm using VMware Player running Windows Server 2008R2 SP1. I am able to run through the setup checks but when I hit "Next" I receive the error above. Also, I am able to install this on my personal computer - just not in my VM. Any way to solve this?

Thanks!

Edit: Just to clarify some things.

1) I am trying to install SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition.

2) I downloaded the .ISO file using my MSDN License and when I downloaded the file the text boxt next to it said that a product key was not required.

3) I went inside the setup directory and found the DefaultSetup.ini and there was a product key inside that has been confirmed by a rep to be a valid product key.

Building a Server for a Small SQL Database

$

My company has a relatively small DB ~10GB that grows maybe 200MB a year. We rarely have more than 4-5 concurrent connections and out of that never more than 2-3 intensive queries at a time. All the documentation for processors, drives, memory, etc..., seems to be geared toward huge datacenter loads hundreds, if not thousands, of times larger.

Is it really worth struggling over purchasing a dual e5-2650 v3 versus a  less expensive 2620 v3 or an intel dc3700 versus a somewhat cheaper Samsung or other?  Is a dedicated RAID controller really worth buying rather than using the new Intel Software Raid tech?

Currently, we have a dual e5-2640 setup with 32GB and things are running smoothly. However, we need a new backup server that may end up reversing roles with our current production server if it's significantly faster.

SQL Server 2014 on Windows 8.1 - Setup Failure - C:\Windows\Temp folder

$

Well, the title pretty much says it all.  I'm installing SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition on Windows 8.1 Pro.  The installation uses domain service accounts for all the services.  The installation progress well until the end.  Then, I get the following message:

Updating permission setting for folder C:\Windows\Temp failed.  The folder permission setting were supposed to be set to (and an ACL list followed by what looked like a object sid).

I'm running setup as administrator.

I tried to manually set the permissions, but that's not working (access is denied).  I also turned off user account control and hit retry.  That failed to.

So, before I go in there and take ownership of everything on the C drive, and grant myself full control over every file on the computer, I thought I ask for what I'm "supposed" to do.  I'm not going to tolerate this file control crap for very long.  I have better things to do.

 Hi Team,

We have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition ( 64 bit ) with SP3 , GDR(4053) and Hotfix 1546.

SQL Build version - 9.0.4053

Before applying SQL Service Pack (SP4), executed the FindSQLInstalls.vbs to find the missing msi and msp file.

Fixed most of them from earlier Service Pack (SP3) and GDR, but output also show the below hotfix 1546 which isunavailable in microsoft portal.

Display Name:    Hotfix 1546 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB919357)
 KB Article URL:  ;http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=919357

Can someone suggest about the above hotfix and provide if any other alternate URL available for the same.

Thanks,
