Setup.exe fails, folder " "does not contain a valid media info file 'mediainfo.xml'"

I'm trying to run the SQL Server R2 setup.exe, and all I get is a command window popping up briefly, then nothing.
This actually affects all SQL Installers that I have on my machine:
2008R2
2012
SSDT BI Pack for VS2012

If I run the setup.exe from the command line, I get this:

An error occurred during the SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup operation

Error result: -2067529698
Result facility code: 1220
Result error code: 30

For more information, review SQL Server R2 Setup Logs in your temp folder

The contents of that log file are:

04/04/2014 10:54:34.677 ======================================================================

I've checked 1000 times that the folder DOES contain a mediainfo.xml file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><MediaInfo><Properties><Property Id="MediaLayout" Value="Full" /></Properties></MediaInfo>

I've seen a few suggestions elsewhere in search results, but nothing has worked so far.

I've previously run the 2008R2 installer and the 2012 installer without problems, so I'm not sure what has changed, or how to get round it.

I'm running on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1, 64 bit with up-to-date Windows Updates.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

SQL 2005 - 2012 upgrade question(s)

I have a multi part question regarding a SQL upgrade.
(I'm extremely new to SQL.)

In our current live/production environment we have a box with Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2005.
We have a number of databases we plan to move to a Windows Server 2012 running SQL Server 2012.

1) We have migrated a few databases over to a new test 2012 server (using backup and restore)
They appear to upgrade as they import.
After import they open and work and I can execute stored procedures
The point has been raised that the stored procedures may not run properly due to the difference between OS's (Server 2003=32bit / Server 2012=64bit)

Do I have to still upgrade SQL after databases are migrated over ?
Or have they upgraded as part of the import process ?

Is there anything additional we need to do due to the difference in operating systems ?

2) Everywhere I've read says to use SQL Upgrade Advisor
I've downloaded SQL 2012 Upgrade Advisor, installed on the Server 2012/Sql2012 box and tried to run the wizzard.
I get an error message saying:-

"SQL Server Version , 11.00.3000 is not supported by this release of Upgrade Advisor, only SQL2005, SQL2008 or SQL2008 R2 is supported"

Should I install MS SQL Server 2012 Upgrade Advisor on the Server 2003 box running SQL 2005 and then run it ? is that where I'm going wrong ?

2a) should I not worry about running upgrade advisor if the data-bases open fine after migration from 2003/Sql2005 to 2012/SQL2012 ?

Any help that anyone could offer about the simplest & safest way to perform the move from Server 2003/Sql 2005 to Server 2012/Sql2012 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello staff. Everything well? I have a doubt about the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise. It is possible to change the version of Server 2012 Enterprise for SQL Server 2012 Express because the database does not reach the 10GB. Thanks for the help

Service Master Key could not be decrypted using one of its encryptions. See sys.key_encryptions for details.

I get this message on two different machines installing SQL2014 developer edition, a Windows 7 and a Windows 8 machine. Both machines have SQL2005 through SQL2012 developer machines installed and working great. I have tried uninstalling all SQL2014 stuff and installing again making sure I was running as an Administrator to no avail.

How do I look at sys.key_encryptionswhen the server will not start to finish installation?

The links in the log only provide the  "We're Sorry" message.

Visual Studio prevents SQL 2008 Express installation on win 8.1

I wanted to install SQL Express 2008 on my Win 8.1 desktop. It gives an error indicating that I should install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 first. I tried, but SP1 installation fails. I also tried to remove VS2008 completely but I still get the same fail when installing SQL 2008 Express.

Now I cannot even  install SQL Manager 2008, to manage database on SQL server.

I have successfully installed VFPOLEDB Driver and using it through LinkServer on my test SQL Express 2008 to get data from FoxPro.

When try to install same driver on Production with SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1, on Windows Server 2008 R2. It is not showing in Provider list of SQL Server Objects as link server.

My Local machine with Express SQL Server is on 32 bit and Production is 64 bit. Is there any effect on this.

From Where I can find it.

Have Sql listen on non-standard ports: but what ports are available?

$

I want Sql Default Instance to listen on a static non-standard port (i.e. <> 1433) but how can I determine what ports are available for use?

a. Relying on "netstat -a" does seem to be a sure bet to me.

b. Another post recommended going through

http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

(which appears to be an exercise in sheer madness to me.)

c. Per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174904/en-us

“”private ports in the range of 49125 to 65535."

Maybe I can use one of those numbers.....

TIA,

Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard SP2 from scratch

$

Hi,

I've just done a little "inventory" in an SQL server containing SQL Server 2008 R2.  I found out that after SP1, SP2, hotfixes, etc, everything related ONLY to SQL counts up to more than 7GB (if not more) in the hard drive!!  And guess the size of the database?  Only 300 MB!

So naturally, I find the files making up SQL server are excessively too big.

I would like to install SQL server from zero in other computer so I would like to ask one stupid question:

Is there a package/installer which includes everything from "SP0" up to "SP2" for SQL Server 2008 R2?  I have found the SP2 setup at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30437

but as far as I can tell, it needs SQL Server 2008 R2 being installed beforehand to work.  Hence my question.

Thanks in advance

How I can change it back to English

Managed installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client

(Due to the unusual constellation of products involved here, and the fact that the last Windows 7 problem I posted about that peripherally involved SQL server was quickly moved to a SQL Server forum, I've chosen this forum to ask my question).

I'm required to install the SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client on several Windows 7 machines in order to support a third-party application (ArcGIS).

I downloaded the MSI, and can do manual installations without any problem, but I'm running into a problem trying to create a managed install package using Group Policy.   I've done this for all sort of other programs like this.  When the system is rebooted, the group policy applies and the package is assigned to the machine, but the installation fails with the following error message in the Application event log:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client -- The required IACCEPTSQLNCLILICENSETERMS=YES command-line parameter is missing.

So I opened the MSI in Orca and created a transform adding a string property namedIACCEPTSQLNCLILICENSETERMS wth a value of YES to the Proprerty table.   AFAICT, there isn't a way to modify the msiexec command line in the Group Policy Editor, and this is the only way to add properties to a GP package.

Unfortunately, deploying the new package with the transform doesn't solve the issue -- the same error message results.

(In case anyone else is trying this, in order to unassign the package and get it to attempt a reinstall on the next reboot, you need to run the Microsoft Fix It MS provides for this purpose.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is to create an administrative install point rather than ty to deploy the downloaded MSI directly.

SQL Express 2014 in place upgrade doesn't work

I have 64-bit Windows 8.1 with all the latest upgrades (downloaded from MSDN last week). I have had SQL Express 2012 With Advanced Services installed for a long time and all working correctly.

When I do an in-place upgrade to SQL Express 2014 with Advanced Services (RTM), it doesn't do the upgrade; it just disables and stops the Browser Service so I can't connect with SSMS. When I restart the Browser Service, I can connect again but the splash screen shows SQL 2012 and when I am connected, the version is 11.0.3128.

I subsequently tried a Repair option but this didn't achieve anything and there were no errors in the log file. If you can remind me where to find it, I can post it here.

Unable to use DTA

If I have a valid (simple query) in SSMS, right-click and take the option for the "Analyze Query Database Tuning Advisor" it opens DTA, asks for a connection, which I provide (the same details as used in SSMS) and click "Start Analysis" ... the "Submitting Configuration Information" processes for a few seconds and then reports the following error:

Error on Line 56, position 24 in "file://c:/users/<myaccount>/AppData/Local/Temp/2/%23Input.XML"

The file is not in the folder

The folder has open permissions for the 'Everyone' group

Any ideas?

SQL Server 2008 R2 in a Win 2008 Server

Install Sql Server 2012 Standard on Windows 7 SP1 Professional 32 bit

Hi,

I have a deployment scenario which I would like to validate with the knowledgeable before I attempt the configuration.

1.  I have Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials machine on which we have a intranet website hosted in IIS.

2.  I have a SQL Server 2012 Standard installed on a machine with Windows 7 Sp1.

The web site needs to access the Sql Server database.  Do you see any issues with the above configuration?.

Thanks,

Ravi.
