SQL Server 2008 R2 Install Freezing (Hyper-V)

$

During the middle of the SQL Server 2008 R2 Install, SQL Server always freezes on the same step when installing in Hyper-V ( SQL_DTS_VSTAConfiguration_install_Cpu64 ):

This is a Fresh Windows Server 2008 R2 Install within a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V System:

Dual Xeon E5345 2.33 GHz

Supermicro MBD-X7DAL Dual Socket 771 mobo

24GB RAM

Virtual Machine:

4 vCPUs

6GB RAM

Every virtual machine I create has the same problem installing. I have to quit the install, remove all components, reboot, and restart the install. I had the same problem on a core i5 2500 hyper-v box earlier. The only software installed on the Hyper-V server is the Hyper-V role itself, Adobe Reader, Office, and Forefront AV client.

Thanks,

John

Hi,

I have a 32 bit instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 2012.  I want to run the instance on SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit.  Is there a process for moving the instance?

Thanks,

Running sysprep and preserving sql server and IIS settings

I am trying to create a windows 7 image using sysprep. The problem I have run into is that I have software installed on the machine which relies on IIS 7.5 and SQL Server 2008 R2 express. Is there a way to run sysprep /generalize but still maintain my systems settings for IIS and Sql Server so when I apply the image my software actually runs?

Basically I need new SID's generated and sysprep seems to be the only way to do this...but then it hoses much of my system. I feel there has to be a way to get around this.

Can anybody help??

SQL Server 2008 version to install cluster ?

$

Hello is there a way to know what SQL 2008 setup/installation files version one has in preparing to install SQL Server 2008 Enterprise 64 bit cluster onto Windows 2008 r2 Enterprise 64 bit cluster?  (Notice SQL here isn't r2 which Windows is.)

If these setup/installation files happen to be SQL 2008 version 10.0.1600.22 would that be ok to proceed with SQL 2008 cluster install?  From what I believe isn't slipstreaming supported only starting at SQL Server 2008 sp1 which is that the minimum version to install SQL cluster and if yes what are the steps to ultimately achieve this?

Thanks in advance.

Cant install SQL Server 2012 with domain service accounts when the DC is a RODC.

Hello,

We have configured a RODC in our DMZ (dmz-dc01) and replication is running from the RWDC dc01 to dmz-dc01.

On the server dmz-sql01, which is domain joined through dmz-dc01, we want to install SQL 2012. I'm logging in to dmz-sql01 with a domain admin account, and running the SQL setup wizard. I'm specifying a domain account as the sql service account, and this doesn't work. The setup wizard can't find this user. The user is replicated and in the list of accounts allowed to be cached. I even tried to prepopulate it.

Looking at the event log on the RODC, I can't see any events where the service user is requesting logon.

I tried doing a test with the following command, from dmz-sql01: "runas /noprofile /user:domain\sqlsvc notepad"

This Works, and in the event log on the RODC, I get an Audit Success event (Kerberos Authentication Service).

The RODC seems to work, and I got multiple clients on the domain through it which I can login through. But the SQL Server 2012 Setup wizard won't allow me to use a domain user when specifying the sql service account. Do you have any idea what can cause this?

Unable to start SQL Server process

Hi,

I have a SQL Server on which the data and logs were stored on D:\ and L:\ drives respectively.

Because of an upgrade these drives have since been dismounted and mounted onto a different server.

Now I can't get the SQL Server process to start. I think it's because the database default locations are set to D:\ and L:\ which no longer exist(this is a hunch based on past experience). Is there any way I can get around this?

Cheers

can multiple instances work on SQL server r2 2008 with one license

I am deciding to buy SQL Server R2 2008 enterprise license.  It is not clearly mentioned, if, with one enterprise server lisence, we could run multiple instances on a single server.

"SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check for earlier failures in the setup."

During installation of SQL Server 2008 express I get the error "SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check

for earlier failures in the setup."

This prevents me from installing it completely it seems. After the install the SQL database service will not run.

In this case I'm attempting to install it so Autodesk Vault will install afterwards so the instance in question is

autodeskvault.

Please let me know what other information you need.

SQL 2008 R2 install error on Windows Server 2012 : specified file not found

Hello,

I'm unable to install SQL 2008 R2 correctly on Windows Server 2012. After few minutes I have a "specified file not found" message. Clicking OK (no other choice) it appears again once then the installation goes on and finishes reporting two errors.

Finally SQL Server instance seems to be installed correctly.

SQL Server version is 2008 R2 with SP2 slipstreamed.

After looking at log file, I found that SQL server tried to invoke "servermanagercmd.exe" (?!?!) which is deprecated in Windows 2012 :

I don't undestand why SQL Server setup is trying to install powershell since it is already available...

Is there a workaround for this or am I missing something ?

Thanks,

I am using Powershell V2 to attempt to script a simple installation of SQL Server 2012 Management Tools via the command line options as follows:

$ret = Invoke-Command -ComputerName $Computer -ArgumentList $MEDIA,$FEATURES,$ACTION,$OPTIONS,$INSTALLDIR -Credential $cred -Authentication Credssp  -ScriptBlock {
param($MEDIA,$FEATURES,$ACTION,$OPTIONS,$INSTALLDIR)
Import-Module ServerManager
$tran = ""
if (-not [IO.Directory]::Exists($MEDIA)){
$hn = hostname
return 0,"Failed to find SQL Server Installer at $MEDIA on $hn"
}

Try{
& $MEDIA\setup.exe /Q /ACTION=$ACTION /FEATURES=$FEATURES /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms /UpdateEnabled=False /INSTALLSHAREDDIR="$INSTALLDIR\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server" /INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR="$INSTALLDIR\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server" $OPTIONS | Out-String -OutVariable tran
} Catch [System.Exception] {
return 0,$_.Exception.ToString()
}
return 1,$tran

I am passing credentials as well as authentication level of Credssp. The SQL Media resides on the remote server. I run the script with elevated permissions and yet it still acts like it does not have permissions to the registry. I have checked the remote registry service to be enabled as well. Credssp for the client and server are configured.

This very same process works fine in Windows 2012. but seems to fail in Windows 2008 R2, can anyone give me some possible things to look for?

Also this is an new install, no existing installations of SQL Server, and I am using a user that is a domain user with local Administrator rights on both the local and remote systems.

Database mail and Exchange 2010

Help!

We had database mail working smoothly with Exchange 2007.  Last night the Exchange administrators migrated everyone to Exchange 2010.  On our end we thought keeping things working would be as simple as changing the name of the mail server in the existing database mail accounts.  Surprise surprise! We should have done more homework when they notified us four days ago.

We don't have easy access to the Exchange Administrators, but from doing our own research it looks as though Exchange 2010 has SMTP turned off by default.  We are working our organizational channels to see if we can get them to turn it on but it's possible they may hang us to dry.  The odds of them setting up a relay server are even slimmer, and from the sender documentation I've found so far that seems to be the only alternative to getting SMTP turned on.  So my question is this:

Is there a way to set up database mail so that it uses the same protocols as Outlook to communicate with Exchange 2010?

I get the impression that Outlook does some kind of handshake on port 135 then asks Exchange for a temporary port that it can send/receive on.  We only need to send.  I'm open to any options anyone has tried that don't require the Exchange Admin to make changes.  The Exchange admins here are virtually inaccessible.  I am not afraid of writing a SQL CLR if someone can give me some vague guidance.

SQL Server 2012 stops running after setup files are copied.

SQL Server 2012 setup stops running after setup files are copied.

I've experiencing the same issue on two different machines. Both are 64 bit running Server 2008.

On both of them I tried installing using the files from the ISO. I initially used winzip to extract the files. The setup was running fine, but the SQL Server engine had an error when it installed. Then using the Add/Remove programs i uninstalled all of the SQL Server 2012 applications, including the setup files.

Now when i try to install using the "New SQL Server stand-alone..." wizard it will copy the setup files and then the wizard never comes back. I've tried mounting the ISO, extracting with winrar, Burning the ISO to a dvd and downloading the 3 files. I also tried mounting ISO of the version that was just recently released. I run into the same issue with all of them.

Thanks for the help.

How can we select one of two DTC services clustered with DTCTest?

Hello,

to support a highly available BizTalk service, we have defined a dedicated instance on SQL Cluster (SQL Server 2008 R2).

Access to database in dedicated instance over ODBC is OK; all firewalls (on servers and in-between) have been turned off of  for all IP traffic.

However, DTCTester fails with typical:
Error:
SQLSTATE=25S12,Native error=-2147168242,msg='[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]
Distributed transaction error'
Error:
SQLSTATE=24000,Native error=0,msg=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid cursor state

We identified that the first DTC listener in clustered for the default instance is used despite the odbc DSN was done on the named instance. Is SQL Browser defaulting to first DTC created?

In turn, how can we test DTC to a specific non-default DTC instance on a cluster?

Thanks in advance for any help

licensing question for a UAT env.

Hi,

what version of SQL Server can I use for a UAT environemnt?

the solution to test has sharepoint foundation + 3 SQL Server servers (SQL, OLAP and SSRS on 3 servers).

the UAT will be done by 50users.

does an MSDN license is enough? or 3 DEV edition of SQL can be used?

or do we have to pay for the enterprise edition (which is what the prod will use)?

thanks.

Need complete, detailed instructions on how to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2008 and R2

There are thousands of forum posts related to uninstalling SQL Server that provide varied information.  Most refer to the BOL articlehttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143412.aspx, which is useless in most error situations.  Can anyone provide true, complete instructions for removing all SQL Server components from a machine?  I'm not sure why there isn't a robust MS-provided utility for this, but I'll be relieved just to have a manual method.  I understand that there will be registry hacks, security group mods, folder deletions/renames from god knows how many places, and probably a cauldron of frog legs and shaken babies.  Just please don't make me cruise these endless seas of bogus forum posts any longer.  I am thirsty and seasick.

Thank you,

-Peter

PS My Environment:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

SQL Server 2008 R2 (I think some of my old SQL 2008 "plain" install may still reside as well) Developer Edition - All components

Yes, I have VS 2010, which prbly caused the SQLExpress BS to hork my origh install in the first place.  I yearn for the day when VS and SQL teams kiss and make up.

SQL Server SP Upgrade - rollback test

HI,

We are testing the rollback plan for SQL Server 2005 sP upgrade from SP3 to SP4. we have taken the whole system backup (file system ans SBS) before the upgrade, upgraded the SQL to SP4.

Now for rollback test - we restored the system and filesystem taken before the upgrade. However i see the following descrepencies after that

Resource DB is showing  SP3 (before upgrade as expected)

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ResourceVersion'); --> 9.00.4035
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ResourceLastUpdateDateTime');-->2008-11-24 14:27:07.113

However the DB engine is still shwoing SP4 as below

select serverproperty('productlevel') -->SP4
select serverproperty('productversion') -->
9.00.5000.00

REgistyr keys i have checked all says SP3

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Bootstrap\Setup\PatchLevel --> 9.3.4035

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Setup\Patchlevel - 9.3.4035
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Setup\version - 9.3.4035.00

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup\versin --> 9.3.4035.00

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion\Currentversion --> 9.00.4035.00

The datbase is working fine though there is a different version for resource vs DB engine vs registry. But i am not sure what vesion the dadtabases are actually on now.
